Citizenship by Birth

As from 1st August 1989 a person born in Malta becomes a Maltese citizen if:

  1. at the time of birth, his/her father or mother was a citizen of Malta or a person born in Malta (of a parent likewise born in Malta if born before 21st September 1964) who ceased to be a citizen of Malta after emigrating;
  2. the person was not born in Malta, but at the time of birth his/her father or mother was a citizen of Malta by Birth in Malta, by Registration or by Naturalisation, they will be granted Maltese citizenship.
  3. they are a new-born infant found abandoned in any place in Malta who would in virtue thereof be stateless, and any such infant shall remain a citizen of Malta until his/her right to any other citizenship is established
