Citizenship

Citizenship is understood to be a lasting bond between an individual and a state. While a citizen may expect to be entitled to rights, privileges and protection from the nation, they are bound to dutifully serve and uphold their allegiance to the same.

Maltese law considers a number of ways whereby an individual may attain Maltese citizenship, including acquisition of citizenship by naturalisation, by birth and by registration.

As Malta accepts dual or multiple citizenship an individual may hold Maltese citizenship together with their current citizenship or citizenships.

The government entity responsible for administering and processing any citizenship related matter, including the accepting and processing of such applications, is Community Malta Agency (Agenzija Komunita Malta).
